A custom book cover can be designed by self-publishers. I have been creating for decades and designing beautiful award-winning books. This site is for you, the author or graphic designer who needs to learn about print book production.
My career started decades ago, and I will provide design basics and advanced instruction. I also create book jackets, design endpapers, design the cover or cover wrap with cloth and foil, and so much more. Of course, interior text pages are also a primary design focus.
You may be a self-publisher, small publisher, or even a graphic artist. I am designing Author Book Studio for you.
Our roots in custom book design
Our parent company, Star Print Brokers is in the business of printing the highest quality books, since 1999. SPB designs books too along with custom book covers. While SPB prints novels, much more of our business is working with self-publishers, artists, photographers, and many others creating coffee table books, cookbooks, children’s books, and a wide array of hardcover and soft cover books.
You can read more about me and my background on my About Us page.
Creating custom book covers
Star Print Brokers will only design books for the books we print. We don’t do inexpensive custom book covers on the fly! Therefore, I began Author Book Studio so that the average self-publisher could learn the skills they need to create their own book covers inexpensively. Most importantly, I pass on the book design and industry-related information that most new self-publishers don’t know about.
What I found along the way is that there are quite a few graphic artists or desktop publishers who do not understand the basics of custom book design and interior book layout. I fix books like those books, riddled with problems. The author or publisher is charged for my time and the corrections made. It falls under the heading of Author Corrections, or Author Alterations.

What you’ll find online are sites for DYI cover creators and romance novel covers that also create custom and not-so-custom book covers. Everyone wants an amazing custom book cover to sell their book. But, a regular graphic artist might not have the skills needed. If they did, they would already be calling themselves book designers. You see, book designers have more skills and more knowledge, so they can command a higher rate. Ah, but I know you self-publishers. You want better design for less money. Let’s see what we can do to help you out!
But, back to graphic designers. What does a graphic artist have to learn? Read on …
Who is a book designer?
Let’s draw the distinction. Just because someone know Adobe InDesign and make ads and brochures, or even booklets, does not mean that they have the skills to design books and book covers.
A trained graphic artist has all the skills with the software, typography, color, etc., needed to design logos, brochures, business cards and likely some website design too. They would also be taught about book design in general. But, if they design book covers and interior book design on a regular basis, they would identify themselves as as book designers.
I’ve hired a good number of print production artists over the years. They may be working at newspapers, magazines, ad agencies, or private companies. Typically, they are usually fleshing out the work of an art director. As they advance, they take on the design work themselves, often either advancing or leaving a company after the gain more experience.
A graphic designer goes a step further than a graphic artist, although the terms are often interchangeable. A designer generally has advanced beyond basic skills. They may or may not be experts using Adobe Illustrator or creating their own non-digital artwork.
Web designers are building websites and even designing them. There is some crossover for web to print or vice versa. But, on more than one occasion, I’ve been given book files to print where the images are all in 72ppi rgb. I’ve seen books start on page one, but it is a left-hand page. There are books with no copyright notice or an odd number of pages instead of an even number. We’ve seen so many mistakes … but help is here!
I graduated decades ago from being a graphic designer and art director for print production, to a book designer. A book designer is not only a graphic designer, but also understands the construction of a book and how it is printing on press. It’s print production, color, photography, layout, typography, and so much more when using InDesign to design a book and all the print elements that go with the binding style.
In conclusion, Author Book Studio focuses giving self-publishers the skills to create their own custom book cover in Adobe InDesign. ABS will help you hone your design skills to create professional-looking book covers that most importantly; sell books. There is much more to selling books, but if you don’t have a great custom book cover and a well-designed book, it greatly diminishes your chances of a bestseller.
